read The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
Good story. 2 mysteries wrapped up together. Summer vibes. Redemption. Ethics and morals and whats right and whats wrong. Deep character development. Its slow to build bc of the character development and lots of back story. It wasn't bad just slower than expected. However, the pace picks up a bit and the ending was unexpected. So its worth it.

Trigiani tells the story of an Italian family on the western seacoast of Italy and their tradtion of gem cutting.
It follows the life of the grandmother during world war II and the younger generations. The author is
a wondeful story teller and this recent historical novel is one of her best.

read The Silent Wife by Kerry Fisher
Good book; an enjoyable read. The story’s point of view rotates between Maggie and Lara, two sister-in-laws facing different challenges within their marriages, their role as mothers, and as independent women. The give-and-take required of each demonstrates what they will do to avoid conflict, and protect their loved ones. Yet, damaging secrets can’t be hidden forever as the reader follows the twists and turns of the extended family.

a bit twisty. the ending was not much of a surprise, so it fell kind of flat for me.

read Incidents Around The House by Josh Malerman
One of the few books to truly terrify me. Following the horrific encounters of an 8-year-old girl with a malevolent entity, Incidents Around The House takes particular aim at the lack of understanding such a small child has of the danger of their situation, and her family's efforts to protect her from the unfathomable. With a truly heinous antagonist and remarkably grounded and realistic explorations of family and desperation, Incidents Around The House is certainly a strong contender for my own book of the year.

read Reversing Diabetes by Don Colbert
This is a very helpful book and one of the things I found shocking was when he said that some people go on salad diets and they don't lose weight. The thing is, with Caesar salad, the dressing can make it go up to 1000 calories. so people need to be aware of the dressings, creams, whatever they're adding.

This is a spectacular version which is very compelling. I've read or listened to this about ten times and I always find it fascinating anyway.

read The Paid Companion by Amanda Quick
Enjoyed this one. An earl needs a fiancee so the "marriage mama's" will leave him alone as he looks for the killer of his great uncle. The woman he chooses (from a paid companion agency) is smart, thinks, has common sense, manipulates just enough to benefit everyone, and will open her own bookshop with the exorbitant fee the earl is willing to pay her because of her unique personality...spirited not simpering. Of course there is intrigue as the story progresses (along with a couple of scenes with mature content, as their relationship evolves). And, I think the lazer was invented in this story. :-) An enjoyable listen.

Good read. A story filled with drama, mystery, and romance. Fiona was the sole survivor of the serial Red Scarf Killer (RSK). A year later, RSK killed her cop fiancé and his K-9 partner as authorities pursued and captured him. Now after years of trying to rebuild her life, Fiona is forced to relive the past as a copycat murderer (RSKIl) emerges. read Sayaka Murata by Earthlings
This book is quite bizarre and I wasn't sure how to rate it. I appreciated the soliloquy on stereotypical expectations for women and how ridiculous they are. I also appreciated that this was a story about overcoming childhood trauma, and how horrible it is the things that some adults do to children. However, the last 1/3 or so was the most bizarre, I didn't get it., and so could have done without it.

An emotional story about a boy sent to a reform school in 1950s Florida. A black boy at the height of Jim Crow south. Difficult to read at times. Due is an amazing writer, eliciting emotion and also creating a page turner as I just had to know what happens to the main characters.

read Last Breath by George D. Shuman
Did not care for this one nearly as much as 18 Seconds. (I think I know why no library has it :-) ) There was way too much detail throughout about autoerotica and breathplay (to try to understand the perpetrator...by the end of the 1st chapter you KNEW why the guy was the way he was...let's go CATCH him!). And a lot of paragraphs throughout describing Sherry's mental health decline because she did not address the visions she saw and could not get rid of (she either needs to talk to a therapist or needs more practice "compartmentalizing"). The information was good...just too much of it for me. I get it, already! Let's move on with the storyline.
IMO, skip this one.

Excellent book. Set in France alternating between 1915 and the 1940s, much like author Fiona Davis does, connecting two stories to one place, decades apart, with a bit of intrigue keeping you engrossed to find out what really happened back then. The theme is a network of secret agents during the war, focusing on female spy.

Stephanie828
read Fatal Intrusion by Jeffery Deever and Isabella Maldonado
Informative regarding tech security type stuff I know so little about.
Liked the diversity of the characters.
Love that the everyday female characters were able to defend themselves against the fake "serial" killer long enough for additional help to arrive and give further assistance.
Disturbing that someone would create a website whereby haters can anonymously provide names of people they feel got lucky in life and unfairly became successful (even though they WORKED extremely hard to become that; but that's lost on the haters); and then that list acts as a hit list.
Gave me a whole new appreciation of "oxygen bleach".
And that dark web seems extraordinarily frightening.
(Note: this was my choice on First Reads/Amazon Prime. Looks like the library has it on order.)
Stephanie828
read The Matrimonial Advertisement by Mimi Matthews
First book in the series. A good read, as it deals with how insanity (real or thrust upon a person) was handled back in 1859 England.
A woman answers an advertisement for marriage and runs to get away from her uncle who is trying to take away her humongous fortune by claiming she, like her mother, is insane (mom was committed to an asylum because of her (legitimate) severe melancholia condition). Prior to the running, the uncle is doing everything he can to get her to sign it over to himself. The uncle's henchmen find her and tell the husband she was not "competent" to make the decision to be married and so the story carries on from there.
Stephanie828
read Immoral by Brian Freeman
A little bit too long of a listen (13 h. 30 m.) IMO. Story was good, but I think a bit more condensing and I would have liked it more. (I almost didn't finish it.) Basically two teenage girls in the same town go missing within a year. Is it a serial killer or not? Doesn't seem like it should be, because the girls have NOTHING in common. SO what's going on?
Stephanie828
read A Regrettable Proposal by Jennie Goutet
A "clean romance".
This is a re-listen and the first Jennie Goutet novel I read. I enjoyed it so much, I've read others by her. Story lines are good; not just romance, but some intrigue and/or trials and tribulations to be overcome.
What I really like about her stories is she mentions dancing with gloved hands (what a thrill it is when it's desired); getting a peek at a well covered ankle; seeing a gentleman whose cravat is loosened at his neck (exposing some body hair,OMG!!!). Details like that make me realize how "buttoned up" everyone was and how much skin was NOT visible (depending on women's necklines, of course) at that time in history...and why it WAS such a thrill to be holding hands or having your hand on his arm...even if they are gloved and covered with multiple layers of material.
Jennie's characters are typically upstanding, honorable, and always trying to do the right thing. She has some snarky characters, but they get their comeuppance in due time.

read Chain gang all stars by Nana Kwame adjei-brenyah
Wow. An important read. This book is more a character study of a whole system. And that study in turn assesses and damns our current criminal justice system with sobering statistics in the footnotes that make this fictional dystopia story feel not too far off into the future. Yet there's enough action and plot to become a page turner. I had to know what happened to these characters, and rooted for all of them really even as the plot sets up that they can't possibly all survive. Just wow.

read Carrie by Stephen King
My first proper King novel. I absolutely loved it. It explores a horrific idea of religion and zealotry intersecting with the supernatural that horrifies on a very human level. While filled with that old-school teen drama storytelling, it feels shockingly modern and contemporary with very relevant themes even today. The horror is very slow until the final act when the jenga tower that King has built comes crashing down in spectacular fashion. Wonderfully paced and a very easy read.

read NO BAD PARTS: HEALING TRAUMA & RESTORING WHOLENESS by RICHARD C SCHWARTZ
As having a Masters of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy I enjoyed reading Dr. Schwartz's new book. It was refreshing to view therapy in a positive fashion where all our parts of our Self are seen in a good way even if there are parts of our Self that are ones we are not happy with. This therapy works and helps people with trauma: eating disorders, addictions, behaviors or habits we want to change or we are stuck in. Dr. Schwartz's model of Internal Family System or IFS works is a compassionate and safe and healing way. Those seeking therapy can get assured that this system works and is successful!

read Come Closer by Sara Gran
My personal favorite book. I originally read this book 3 years ago and decided to re-read it to see if I still held it in such high esteem. It absolutely did. It's eerie and terrifying without relying on cheap gimmicks or jumpscares. Come Closer is a story about a melting mind, about how the little things that we ignore every day add up. It's very short and could be read in a single sitting, but makes remarkable use of the space it has to tell a thorough and engaging story.

This was a very interesting read. It kept me hooked but at the end not sure about how well I really liked it. The protagonist is not la likable character but you could see how she gets involved it what she does.

read The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams
Great listen.
Even if you aren't interested in seeing how the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was compiled (the debate over which words and definitions should be included, which shouldn't and WHY) this is a fascinating read. Basically it's the story of Esme, a young motherless girl (her Dah is doing his best) and her life story. She knows and meets some wonderful women that help her in many ways throughout her life's journey; giving her guidance, comfort, assistance, friendship, advice, compassion;...all the things women need from their true friend(s).
I'm not sure why, but this book reminded me of The Book Thief (not the story line of course but); the imagery, the tone, the thoughtfulness in the way it was written to cover the historical time line of 1887-1928 with the way attitudes and perspectives changed (somewhat) over that time and then jumping to 1989. Even the author's note was informative.
This is a book I will purchase for my home library.

While I thought 668 was much too long, I enjoyed being back in this story. The characters are strangely compelling, even when you wouldn't think they would be. read The Lion by Nelson DeMille
I love the "John Corey series" of books. I'm glad I found this author at the library's book sale. I had not heard of him. There were multiple copies of his books there so I picked one up. After starting with "The Panther" I went back, picked up as many of the John Corey books as I could and started reading them in order. So far,I have enjoyed them all.
Thank goodness John has a brain, some disregard for procedures and protocols, a wicked sense of humor, and a [new] wife who is finally coming to appreciate (although does not agree with) his unconventional methods. I even laugh at John's 13-year-old-boy-fantasy/imagination regarding attractive women. Somehow it's funny, not disrespectful; maybe because they are his THOUGHTS ONLY and not verbalized?
He's a man's man; retired NYPD cop (on disability, happened in the line of duty) working on an anti terrorist task force with the FBI (his [now] wife is part of THAT division) and w/the team save us from terrorists/attacks. Love it!

read Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell by Nathan Ballingrud
Fun collection of 6 shorts, ranging in quality from alright to great. Not really a bad story here, but it struggles to build its cohesive, overarching story. An interesting take on the concept of Hell, basing itself in Judeo-Christian philosophies but doing a lot to differentiate itself and create a much more artistic and innovative interpretation of Hell. Some very fun ideas at play and not a lots of variety between the shorts to keep things constantly feeling fresh.

read 18 Seconds by George D. Shuman
I've read this book twice and now listened to (an abridged) audiobook this 3rd time over the past 15 years (the full book is much better than this abridged version).
I really like the premise of it.
A young woman, Sherry Moore, who had some type of accident at a very young age, was blinded and can now "see" the last 18 seconds of memories of deceased persons by holding their hand. She helps various people (and becomes a crime fighter) with this "gift". It's not the last 18 seconds of their life...so it's partially what they see and mostly what they chose to remember in their last 18 seconds of life (some of these memories are happy, from years ago).
There's no "conversation" between her and the deceased.
The author has written a couple of additional books so Sherry Moore is a series. I may look for used copies to read as I don't see any in any library we have access to.

Oh, I loved this story! Hank is so resilient and determined and it tackles the topics of trusting adults, foster care, and taking care of yourself even when you shouldn't have to. It seemed like a glaring omission at the end there, which wrapped up with hope but a little too neatly

A great read, and for a short time a bit of a head-scratcher in the who-done-it department. Frankie Elkin is a recovering alcoholic who travels the U.S. searching for missing people after the police and the community have given up hope. An outstanding story of Boston in the 1970s - totally fictional but compelling as one woman faces down cultural norms in her Irish Boston community. The reader has a true Southie Boston accent and you do feel transported. The subject matter is adult with homicide(s), racism, police corruption and predatory relationships.
You can see where the story is going well in advance, but the journey is worth taking.
I have read this author before and have just picked up two more of his works. Excellent Read

read Four Found Dead by Natalie D. Richards
A moderately gripping story of a group of employees who become trapped in a movie theater/mall on the eve of demolition. Told from the perspective of one employee who witnessed the murder of her father when she was a child and now sees herself and her friends in a dangerous situation. She has successfully channeled her anxiety into helping others. An 'if you see something, say something' thriller. This is a good audio book, easy to listen to with good narration.

read Promise Boys by Nick Brooks
A good story about an inner city 'charter style' school and the students who attend. Typical storyline of an official who starts out with the best intentions and goes wrong along the way and begins skimming the money. This was an audio book with a very elaborate production team, different actors voiced each character. A good but somewhat underdeveloped story line that focused less on the mystery and more on the students and their interpersonal struggles.

read Never by Ken Follett
Wow. Just...WOW!!! Very believable and frightening read. I could certainly see this happening, depending on who's leading/running certain countries...be it The U.S., China, Russia or any country possessing nuclear weapons.
What a great story teller Ken Follett is.
I will be re-reading parts to try to better understand the "old school Communist China" POV as presented here. Some of their thinking seems "reasonable". Some seems off the walls crazy with with a double twist of unbelievable folly.
There are also some minor story lines playing out that were both terrifying and eventually joyful in their own right.
If you don't want to read how the end of our existence (in the U.S.) might come about from nuclear war because of escalating situations between Superpowers, skip this one.
At the very end I thought; and life goes on...for some.

read Devil In Winter by Lisa Kleypas
Enjoyed this storyline. For two people who didn't know each other, they certainly hit it off quite quickly into the story. How sweet Sebastian was to Evie on the trip to Gretna Green. Making sure she ate on their non-stop trip, taking off her slippers so she's more comfortable during the ride, getting her a hot brick to keep her feet warm. And it only got better the more they got to know each other. Yes, there were some trials and misunderstandings, but that's what happens when you run off and marry someone you don't know. Note: mature theme throughout; this may not be a book for you.

read Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe
This book was better than I expected. Its about a young woman who gets pregnant and has a baby - the father is her married college professor - and she has to figure out a way to survive financially. She creates an onlyfans account and it proves lucrative. Oh and her father is a former pro wrestler (think WWE) and he helps her out. Its funny
However, I didn't expect the deeper themes - how we as society judge sex workers and also substance users as less than, what it means to be a good person, motherhood, accepting people for who they are and also putting in boundaries. I think I'll be processing this one for awhile.

Oh, Piper! My darling Piper! This book made me cry and clutch my chest and I just fell in love with the story and its fierceness!
The goodness inside:
•Children’s academic decathlon
•Gifted and talented kids
•The isolation of being smarter / more advanced than your peers
•Age appropriate discussion of intersectionality and privilege
•Young feminists realizing the world is not built to empower and support women and femmes and discovering that systemic oppression is reality and it sucks
•A new baby and a new stepdad and a sister who isn’t around and a mom who can’t give you attention you need
•What happens when you focus on honesty instead of always choosing “niceness”
•ADHD / neurodiverse rep
•Trans / non-binary rep
•Tons of medical content but so fascinating to me because I was previously unaware of precocious puberty
•BIG FEELINGS!!
•Beautiful character growth

I was in this play over 40 years ago in high school. Rereading this took me back in time - I could still hear the voices of the main characters and see their faces all these years later. I didn’t know that Miller wrote this in during the time when McCartheism was taking hold in America. The parallels between those two periods in history are eye-opening. Especially after learning that Miller was later asked to testify before the House committee on anti-Americanism. He was asked to confess to being a Communist and to name others in the Communist party. Like his protagonist, Miller refuses to lie to the committee.

Wow. A beautiful story about a death doula named Clover and what she learns from those who are dying. The story focuses on one relationship she has that changes her life. Its also about how she grieves the loss of her grandfather, and one of the themes is that there is no right timeline, nor any right way to grieve, despite what people may say. Clover and another main character Sebastian annoyed me at times. However, the story had me tearing up in places and ended in such a heartwarming way that makes this a story im so glad I read. Itll stick with me for awhile.

read Horror movie by Paul Tremblay
A very disturbing book where life and art (movie making) intertwine and cause or even imitate one another. 4 kids in college make their 1st movie. Valentina plays herself and directs...Cleo wrote the script and Karson is doing everything else. The 4th kid is an unnamed thin kid the main subject or creature based on a "cursed" reptilian mask found at the abandoned school where most of the movie is shot.
Does their bullying cause him to "become" the monster or was it in him all along waiting for the right time.
At the end of the book...well...just read it and be scared and disturbed!

read Tragedy on the Line by John Rhode
I picked this up in an antique store and I'm sorry to say I hated it.
1)There is one extremely smart logical thinking professor with exceptional patience and deductive skills. Everyone else trying to determine if there has been an accident or a murder are portrayed as bumbling fools...most especially the Superintendent from Scotland Yard (who's waiting to be told "who done it"). Almost all the family are insinuating or outright pointing fingers at their relatives. Typical mystery story.
2) It reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel. In the last chapter of the book, it turns out one of the characters is not who they have been portrayed to be throughout the story.
I DID like the character of the Nancy Wickenden. Her wit and effrontery when speaking with and about her relatives was refreshing. She didn't care what anyone thought of her. I wish she had a bigger part in the book. She's pure entertainment ;-)
If you see this in an old book store, pass over it. Sorry Mr. Rhode.

read The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King
I keep reading Stephen King because he's a hell of a storyteller. This story is GOOD. The writing is compelling, the pacing keeps you wanting to turn the pages, and the characters give you whiplash rooting for and against them.
That being said, I didn't love the first book in the series, but am glad I continued.
However, this book is dated in a lot of ways. There are outdated slurs of all kinds and horrible ableist language. This is hard to overlook, despite the book's publishing date. I can forgive some of it, but not all of it.
Overall, I had a great time reading this and will continue reading the series over time

read Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay
Really interesting read, blending the screenplay format into the narrative's main story of the production of this movie and its reboot. Very dark and heavy in its subject matter, it captured the passion and drive creatives take on to complete their work and explores the toxicity that it produces. It isn't scary by the traditional metrics of screams and jumps, but the closer it inches toward the end the more desperation takes a front-row seat and enthralls the reader with its inevitability. Hated the ending, the 2nd to last chapter should have been it. The real final chapter makes no sense and isn't set up to be an effective finale and left me questioning everything I just read (and not in a good way).

read Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
Must read - humorous, serious, thought-provoking story of work, love and a different definition of family. Set in the early 1960s, Elizabeth Zott is a female scientist amongst an all male team. Discrimination as to females is prominent throughout the book, making one realize how difficult workplaces for women were back then, just what was expected of them, and how determined they needed to be to succeed. A career could be easily destroyed. Elizabeth is brilliant, has a quick wit, finds love with a Nobel Prize winning scientist, and uses chemistry to teach women how to cook, starring in a TV show. More importantly, through this show she’s teaches women to explore their full potential, and dares them to change the status quo.

read Dirty Laundry by Richard Pink & Roxanne Emery
Started reading June 12.. not far enough in to give a proper review, however something that is notable and appreciated is the way the book has been organized. The paragraphs are separated by a space which I find super helpful, thoughtful, and appropriate given the subject. I think this will be an easy read that provides insight into the day to day reality of living with ADHD.
